For this project, you will be writing a personal essay about

For this project, you will be writing a personal essay about a person who was influential in your life. This should demonstrate everything you have learned in this unit, especially about anecdote and purpose. Your paper will be focused on one person who has been a major figure in your life. This could be aparent, grandparent, older sibling, teacher, or someone else who helped shape your identity. First of all, decide who you will write about for your essay. The purpose of your essay will be to show us their personality and describe how they have influenced your identity. You will do this through relating no less than ten anecdotes. Your anecdotes need to use descriptive language and sensory details. This essay should not just talk about the person, it should be a series of moments pieced together in a meaningful way to show us who this person was and why they were important.(You have probably written narrative essays in other English classes that ask you to focus on one meaningful experience. This will be completely different from that. Please do not attempt to recycle an essay from a different course for this unit project.)This is a creative piece. Choose an organizational style that allows you to include your anecdotes but is driven by your purpose. You may imitate the style of ‘A Swimming Lesson’ or ‘Terwilliger Bunts One’ if you wish. Also, because this is Creative Non-Fiction and your paper should be seeking to communicate a ‘truth’ to your reader, facts are less important. If you need to rearrange, alter, or exaggerate events, you may do so as long as you do so in a way that promotes your purpose and is not noticeable to your reader. Use creative license wisely. This essay should be between two and five paragraphs (500-1500 words) in length. Your final draft should be saved and submitted as .doc or .pdf file. It should be in 12point font in Times New Roman.10% of your grade will be on grammar and mechanics. Write as clearly and correctly as you can. This means that 90% of your grade is based on your ideas however, you will not earn an A if you do not proofread carefully and check for errors. Most importantly, remember this is a culminating project for you creative nonfiction unit.
